Många kan nog hålla med om att det är roligare att svettas på en paradisö än att svettas hemma. Här listar vi 8 anledningar till att åka på en träningsresa!

Maldiverna bjuder på fantastiska paradisatoller och dykning i världsklass. Ett bra upplägg för en riktigt skön solsemester med andra ord. Men det finns saker att undvika när man reser hit. Vi har listat fem av de mest uppenbara.

The Northern Atolls – the least-developed region of Maldives – remain scarcely known to foreigners, which makes them a great place to experience traditional Maldivian life. Maldivian history owes much to this part of the country – national hero Mohammed Thakurufaanu, the man who drove the Portuguese colonizers out of Maldives in the 16th century, was born on the island of Utheemu in Haa Alifu Atoll. The island is today a place of pilgrimage for Maldivians, who come to see his small wooden palace.

Allt började med en längtan efter sol och ett par slumpmässigt bokade flygbiljetter. Spola fram ett och ett halvt år och 27-åriga Jacqueline Garellick har lämnat vardagen i ett regnigt Göteborg, gift sig och flyttat till ö-paradiset Maldiverna. "Jag kände direkt att jag kommit hem och hittat min flock."

Dagarna då man behövde vara miljonär eller spara i flera år för att kunna resa till det tropiska ö-paradiset Maldiverna är sedan länge förbi. Med reguljärflyg, boende i enkla gästhus och transport via lokala färjor kan drömmen om en Maldivernaresa bli sann för gemene man.

The Southern Atolls have a justified reputation for independent mindedness. In 1959, the southernmost atolls broke away from Male's rule to form the short-lived United Suvadive Republic before being forcibly taken back under the control of the central government a few years later.

North and South Male Atolls are home to many of the country’s most famous and best established resorts, and all the islands here are within easy reach of the capital city and Velana International Airport. South Male Atoll is also home to Maafushi, the biggest success story of Maldives' opening up to independent tourism on inhabited islands, where there are now more than 50 guesthouses and multiple dive and water-sports centres, although concerns about overdevelopment abound.

Centered on a vast, sumptuous and inviting oval lagoon dotted with reefs, Ari Atoll sits to the west of the capital and is famed for its superb diving and stellar beaches. The nutrient-rich water that flows out to the open sea through large channels between the islands attracts many ocean-going creatures and divers from all over the world.

The pint-sized Maldivian capital is the throbbing, mercantile heart of the nation, a densely crowded and fascinating place, notable mainly for its stark contrast to the laid-back pace of island life elsewhere in the country.

Joggande, simmande och snorklande tog vi oss an obebodda sandatoller och korallrev med akvariumklart vatten. Under en vecka till havs fick vi uppleva ett annat Maldiverna, långt ifrån dekadens och överdådiga lyxhotell.
