Allt började med en längtan efter sol och ett par slumpmässigt bokade flygbiljetter. Spola fram ett och ett halvt år och 27-åriga Jacqueline Garellick har lämnat vardagen i ett regnigt Göteborg, gift sig och flyttat till ö-paradiset Maldiverna. "Jag kände direkt att jag kommit hem och hittat min flock."

North and South Male Atolls are home to many of the country’s most famous and best established resorts, and all the islands here are within easy reach of the capital city and Velana International Airport. South Male Atoll is also home to Maafushi, the biggest success story of Maldives' opening up to independent tourism on inhabited islands, where there are now more than 50 guesthouses and multiple dive and water-sports centres, although concerns about overdevelopment abound.

The Northern Atolls – the least-developed region of Maldives – remain scarcely known to foreigners, which makes them a great place to experience traditional Maldivian life. Maldivian history owes much to this part of the country – national hero Mohammed Thakurufaanu, the man who drove the Portuguese colonizers out of Maldives in the 16th century, was born on the island of Utheemu in Haa Alifu Atoll. The island is today a place of pilgrimage for Maldivians, who come to see his small wooden palace.
