Eastern Uganda

Thanks to an intoxicating blend of adrenaline adventures and superb scenery, eastern Uganda is a must on any East African journey. Here the mighty Nile begins its epic journey north. White-water rafting the Nile River is the main draw for adventurers seeking a wild ride, but there's also the subtler, sweatier pleasure of trekking through Mt Elgon National Park or relaxing with a visit to stunning Sipi Falls. The regional capital of Jinja offers a charming and friendly base on the shores of Lake Victoria where travellers can spend a few days or more enjoying the chilled atmosphere and top-notch outdoor activities.

Southwestern Uganda

A lush region of clear lakes, thickly forested islands and misted mountains, the southwest offers a taste of the best of Uganda. Whether you're on world-class treks along the western Rift Valley or preferring the placid escapism of Lake Bunyonyi's numerous islands, this gorgeous and diverse area should not be missed. Terraced hills and farmland cover much of the region. But it's also Uganda’s top wildlife-watching destination and one of the best places in the world to spot primates. A visit with the mountain gorillas on the steep slopes of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park ranks as one of Africa's top experiences. You can also go chimp trekking in Kibale Forest National Park, home to the greatest variety of primates on the planet. There are safari opportunities too, from famous tree-climbing lions that steal the show at Queen Elizabeth National Park, to its herds of giraffes, hippos and buffaloes.

Guide till Karamoja i Uganda

Vagabonds skribent och fotograf, Marcus Westberg, begav sig ut på roadtrip genom nordöstra Uganda på motorcykel. I den här guiden får du tips på boenden, resvägar och aktiviteter.

Kampala

Bustling Kampala makes a good introduction to Uganda. It’s a dynamic and engaging city, with several worthy attractions to keep you occupied for a couple of days. As the heartland of the Buganda kingdom, Kampala has a rich and colourful history, visible in several fascinating palaces and compounds from where the nation was run until the arrival of colonialism.

Jinja

Famous as the historic source of the Nile River, Jinja is now the adrenaline capital of East Africa. Get your fix of white-water rafting, kayaking, quad biking, mountain biking and horse riding in a gorgeous natural setting. The Nile River's world-famous rapids are under threat, however. In 2011 the Bujagali Hydroelectric Project buried around half of the rapids under a giant reservoir. Although the government has pledged to not further dam the river, Uganda still needs energy and so a new hydroelectric plant is planned for Kalagala Falls. Though worker strikes and faulty construction have it behind schedule for now, it's expected that the Isimba Dam will flood some key rapids and even an island lodging as early as October 2018. It's not the end of rafting though. Meanwhile locals keep pushing to keep Jinja's tourism industry alive with offerings that have wisely begun to diversify.

Entebbe

On the shores of gorgeous Lake Victoria, Entebbe is an attractive, verdant town that served as the capital city during the early years of the British protectorate. Today it’s the relaxed pace of life and nearby natural attractions that give the city its charm.
